Question:

My cat brought home a baby bird?

Its fine but it doesn't know how to fly. It must've fallen out of its nest and the trees in my backyard are REALLY high so we can't put it back in its nest. We called Animal Control in my area and I left a message but since its July 4th they might not get back to us until tomorrow. It won't take the bread we're trying to give it and it's hungry. My family isn't taking it as seriously as I am. I'm scared it'll die. Is there any way I can save it?

  1. You need to get an eye dropper with water and start giving it a little at a time. Then moisten the bread with water and feed it to the bird in tiny pieces. It should be o.k. with that until you can get it somewhere on Monday.

  2. You could scramble an egg and mix it up in a blender with a little milk so it is almost a liquid and use an eye dropper or a straw and feed it.

  3. take dry cat food and ground it up until its powdery and mix it with water so its nice and smooth and feed it through spoon or syringe

  4. Hey, you have a cat...that's great.  That means you have cat food, and that is the perfect food for a baby bird (next to what it's parents would feed it).  Do not feed him bread.

If your cat eats canned food, put a little on a flat toothpick and put it in his mouth.  If your cat eats dry food, then wet the food with some warm water, mush it up and use the same technique.

  5. the bird will probably (hate to break it to you) die.

there is sooooo much bacteria in a cats mouth. the bird is probably infected, especially if it has a wound.

  6. Chances are good that if yor cat leaves the baby alone

the chicks crys will bring it's parent to him/her.

There is little you can if it can't be placed back in the nest.

Some times a baby will fall, or br pushed out of the nest in the wild.

Try calling your local wilflife control.

  7. Check the bird over carefully for wounds, if it has any it will likely die.  Cats carry a lot of bacterial in their saliva causing infection to spread quickly.  If it has any wounds...it needs immediate medical attention at a wildlife rehab.  If the bird has no apparent wounds and  if the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:

Some of these rehabs may be individuals that do this sort of thing out of their home...so they may be available on a holiday.
