My 8 year old kitty cant seem to open her mouth all the way. I adopted her over two months ago. Whenever she yawns she cant open her mouth all the way and snaps her mouth shut and either runs away or gags and then runs away. I thought it was a hairball but I have been giving her oils and she is still gagging. She is eating okay but right after she is done eating she will gag and a little food will come up. She had oral surgery over a month ago and at the same time had her teeth cleaned. One of the teeth that was rotting and was removed was one of the ones in the way back of her mouth. Maybe this is related? The other tooth that was pulled was one of her fang teeth. I dont know if this has anything to do with this but I think it is important to add. I am taking her to a vet in about an hour but I want more than one opinion. Any vets out there?

  1. obviously there is an irritation in the back of the mouth.  The vet will find it for sure.  (maybe it has a mouse that wants to come back out)

  2. I am not a vet, But I have heard of this happening to other peoples cats... what I am guessing is that there is something in the foods and other stuff you are feeding her that is irratating her throat... or she has something stuck in her throat. This is all I can help you with... but I hope it helps.

  3. take her to your loca vet or animal hospital. I dont think anyone can diagnose her without seeing her, and even if they can, they can't fix her. You need professional help, ASAP.

  4. Maybe her jaw is broken?

  5. I am thinking maybe since the oral surgery, there is some swelling or piece of skin kind of hanging that she isn't used to and she gags as a reflex when she tries to swallow. Or maybe she isn't chewing her food right with the fang tooth missing.

  6. You are smart for taking her to the vet.  She absolutely needs to be examined.  Good luck with your fur baby.  Hope it works out well.

  7. Get her to the vet ASAP! If there is something that is gagging her in her throat I don't think it's a great idea to wait! It could end up blocking her throat so that she can't get air!
