help me, my cat chews on plastic bags like crazy, i have to keep all bags hidden, i bought the scented bags for my bathroom trashcans and he didn't chew on them for a while but now he does, i even came home today and he had actually eaten some, he vomited on the carpet and there was a big chunk of bag, it really scared me. is there something wrong with him? is his belly hurting? he also does something else weird, he's a total inside cat, never been out, about 3 years old, from time to time he will p**p on the floor right beside his litter box, it's clean and everything, it seems weird to me. should i take him to the vet?

  1. Yes i would definately take him to the vet especially since he vomited already. I mean my cat loves to play with supermarket plastic bags too but he never digested one=/ So yeah take him to the vet and everything should be fine.

    Good Luck(:

  2. Some cats chew on plastic bags, some chew and eat wool.  You can't keep bags near them so lock up or dispose/recycle ALL your plastic bags and use paper bags in the garbage bins instead.

His ability to actually EAT the bags is your one warning, the next time it may be an emergency trip to the vet to do major surgery on his intestines to get the stuff out.

As for the litter box, some cats decide they want a second box to p**p in, and keep the first for peeing only. I have one that does that.  But if putting down newspaper around the box helps, then try that first.

  3. I thought I was the only one in the world with a cat addicted to plastic! I always thought he did it just cause he liked the "crunching" (similar to a human "smacking" some gum...)

I never questioned that since he at least stopped tearing up the toilet paper all over the house!

  4. Yeah, you should take him to the Vet.  My cat, Tinkerbell, always tries to eat plastic bags as well but I dont think hes sick or anything.  He doesnt throw up and always uses the littermaid.

  5. a vet screening isn't out of the question, as nutrition issues may be a factor.  Also, check his teeth.  If he has never had a cleaning done then he may be due.  His gums may be sore and he could just be trying to relieve some pain.  Pet Stages makes cat chew toys that crinkle like bags but are safe to chew on.  They also make kitten teething toys that you can soak in water and freeze which will sooth sore gums.  as for pooping outside the litter box, this could simply be because of the color of the floor, there may be some litter on the floor, or he just plain missed.   A vet screening will take care of medical concerns.

as for stupid things cats do, my oldest kitty likes to chew on wrapping paper ribbons.  the cheaper they are they better they chew according to her.  I have to be careful during the holidays or the presents under the tree are covered in cat spit and hair.  She also likes the protective bags my husband puts on his comic books.  Go fig, cats are quirky.
