Question:

My cat gave birth and all the kittens died?

i am a registered breeder and my cat gave birth about 2 weeks ago. this was her second litter. the first litter was perfectly healthy. the kittens from this litter just started dying one after another. about a week before the birth she had a discharge (bloody kindof *****) coming from her. i took her to the vet when this was happening and they couldnt tell me much and just said to wait the night to see if she gives birth. she did. then they started to die over the next week.

now she is on heat again. it has only been two weeks since the kittens died and i am taking her to the vet tomorrow for blood tests to see if she is ok to breed again. i am just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone before and if it will be ok to breed with her again so soon after the giving birth to the last litter that died? how long does it take for blood test results?

any help and advice would be great.

  1. Hi Jamie, One would think that pus would indicate infection and I' m surprised that the vet did not culture or take blood and urine tests. An infection may been introduced to the kittens before birth or during nursing, causing their death. I would never let a cat breed this soon after giving birth. The chances of miscarriage, or deformed kittens is much higher. She needs to have tests run before  having any more kittens. She just may not be a good candidate for breeding anymore. It may be best to have her spayed.

  2. If you really are a registered breeder then you would all ready know the answers to your questions.  Its only been two weeks since she gave birth and lost kittens and am I understanding you that you are considering breeding her again so soon?

Cats aren't "on" heat they are "in" heat.  And a vet would have been able to give you better than a "wait and see answer".

I'm sorry, but even with only the experience I have dealing with feral cats giving birth something about your claim of being a registered breeder, verses your question don't add up.

Take the cat to a vet, get her fixed.  There are all ready too many unwanted and unloved cats in the world.  Both "blue blooded and mixed breed.

  3. I would spay this cat one litter living is enough and natural now

just spay her and let her be

  4. She is not OK to breed again!  The last litter died, I would find out why and make sure that problem is remedied and she has had plenty of time to become healthy again before I even considered breeding her.

  5. I won't say exactly this happened to me.  We are still not totally sure a year later about how it happened, but my cat did have two to three kittens last year that were born either really weak and died or dead. Just yesterday she delivered 5 healthy kittens.

I would go for the blood tests, but if nothing is wrong with the mother, then perhaps just watch next time she gives birth and get the kittens checked to make sure they are healthy.

Not the best advice in the world, but I hope it helps a little.

  6. I am not a breeder and my experiences come with rescue work, however...how could you even consider breeding her again so soon ???  To me that is totally irresponsible.

  7. Sounds like she had an infection in her reproductive system that ultimately led to her kittens being infected.  It was probably too much for them to handle.  They may have gotten it while in the womb or during the birth.  Let the vet know what happened.  Perhaps she needs to be treated with antibiotics before breeding.
