Question:

My cat goes in the neighbors yard and I really don't like her to. My neighbors are awful people.

I'm afraid they may kill her one day. If I keep her inside she will cry all day in pain. But as soon as I let her out, within minutes she's in the neighbors yard. My husband feels like it's right to punish her, but i think that's pointless. Any advice on keeping her away?

  1. I would SPRAY her with Water while in the neighbors yard.

Another thing you can do is put her on a leash that way she can enjoy the outsided but not in the neighbors yard.

this is a hard one ... don't play into the cat "crying all day"  she is just trying to get her own way.

    good luck

  2. Well there's no way to keep her out of there unless you keep her inside. She may be crying because she's bored. Get her toys and climbing posts and things like that. If you don't keep her in then she will probably just keep going over there. Make sure she is spayed, the neighbors may have an unneurtered boy kitty and maybe she wants to mate

  3. She isn't crying in pain.  She just wants to go out.  Ignore her cries.  If you want her to get fresh air, put her on a 10 foot secure leash right outside your door.  Make sure she can't slip her collar over her head or that it isn't a break-away collar.  Not sure?  Get a harness instead for her.  Let her get used to the harness first.  The time to be careful is the time between you opening the door and you putting the cat on the leash.  (That's why maybe a harness would be better.)  Don't let her out when you are not home, and don't let her out for more than maybe 15 minutes at a time.

If you try to punish her, she isn't going to understand.  All she'll think is that you let her out, and then after she has run around, you punish her for it.  She will get confused.

  4. My neighbors put a leash on there cat.  It is kind of rude to let your cat go over there onto there property, especially if they don't like cats.  So either keep her in the house or put her on a leash.  She will have to get used to it.

  5. She isn't crying in pain she is just crying to get her to let her out.  Your cat will be much safer inside.   Just stop letting her out.   You may have to put up with a few days of her crying ot get out but she will soon realize she is not getting out and stop crying.

As far as punishment it depends on what you are punishing her for.   Going into the neighbors yard or crying?   Cats don't understand property lines so punishing her for going in the neighbors yard is useless, by you going to punish her she is going to associate the punishment with you not the yard.  As far as the crying you can try however keep in mind physical punishment is basically useless in cats the don't really understand it because it is not part of normal cat life, so stick with a verbal repramand, a noise that will startle the cat or a squirt of water.

  6. Keep her inside or move. Since moving is probably not an option, keep her inside. Both of my cats are indoors only & they're in excellent health and happy (they pur and knead all the time). Your cat isn't "in pain" just because she can't be outside.

As far as punishing her goes, cats aren't as easy to train as dogs. Cats are dominant and free minded. They'll do their own thing no matter how many times you scold or punish them. Cats can jump fences and climb trees, so a fence would be pointless. You could get one of those underground perimeter fences, but they can be expensive. But your neighbors shouldn't have to deal with your cat in their yard. If they wanted a cat in their yard, they'd get their own. It's their property and they can call animal control if they want.

  7. I keep my cats on a leash the entire time they are outdoors, I also keep a bell on them so I know where they are 24/7. They do not mind a bit being on a 10 foot leash and put outside, maybe you should do the same to your cat to keep her in your own yard. Or you can buy a huge cage and keep her in it when she is outside. My female cat stays in a cage when shes in season and outside and kept on her leash when she is not in season. She is 2 1/2 yrs old and I dont want her having babies and she won't as long as I'm responsible enough to keep her leashed or caged when she is outside unattended.

  8. Make her an inside cat. She is not crying in pain, she is just used to going out and is like a child whining to get out. She will get used to being in after a little while. It is safer for her to be inside especially if the neighbors have given you some reason to think they will something to your cat. Some people do not like cats and it is not fair to them to keep letting your cat go in their yard.
