one of the kittens was caught in a door and now is in pain and can't use it's front paws. i and my 13 year old have been nursing the kitten water and trying to get his mother to continue to nurse him but she is flat refusing. I have elected euthanasia but my husband and child are trying to make me wait to see if the abnomiallys are caused by injured muscles and tendants; however i feel it is a broken back. Then of course we weren't going to keep the kittens and now we have a serious dilemma. I can't afford a vet and was going to pay humane society 25 dollars to euthanis him.

what would you do?

  1. You have been giving the kitten milk right, not just water? By milk I mean kitten replacement milk. Since the mother's not nursing, you have to offer him milk that's as close to hers as possible. Kittens don't drink water or eat hard food until 4-6 weeks. You need to at least call your regular vet to see what he/she says. Have the mother and kittens all seen the vet yet? You should take them all pretty soon anyway.

  2. Ok here's a first option other than uthanising him.

The kittens are 6 weeks old and you really should try to get them eating soft cat food, and also try to get them to start drinking water.

Especially try to get the injured kitten to accept food. You can go to the store and buy a product called KMR it's a milk replacement formula for kittens. It can be used on kittens from the time they are born. Feed the kitten the KMR using an eye dropper. If it is the muscles and tendons that are injured by the kitten eating it should get stronger. By the way the mother knows there is something wrong with the kitten that's why she doesn't want to bother feeding it anymore. That is a natural reaction for a cat.

The only sure way to figuere out if it's a broken back bone is to have x rays done. However I do understand that you can't afford it.

    So now my second option

There is a place on the internet called The Craigslist.

    www.Craigslist.com

Try going on that and posting the kitten on there. Explain to the people in the pet section that kitten has been injured and they have to have the money to bring the kitten to the vet. Also sometimes there are vets and vet assistants and cat rescue workers on there. There may be someone on their that can help you out. Other than having to put the kitten to sleep. However if I were you I wouldn't charge a re homing fee for the kitten. If nothing on there works then you may have to have the kitten uthanized. I'm sorry to hear about your kitten. I hope you do find another alternative. Good Luck to you, your family and the kitten.

  3. I think that you should just wait a few days, and see if the mother cat still refuses to nurse him.  If she still refuses to nurse him, then I'd advise you to go to a vet, and ask for his or her assistance.

  4. noooooooooooo...... wat u can do is massage its feet to get it stimulation goin.... i sooo hate that word.."euthanis"

  5. If you can't afford a vet you shouldn't have pets.

They would all be better off if you took them to the Humane Society or a no-kill shelter where the volunteers work hard to find homes for them.

The shelter will be able to best evaluate the condition of each of them and decide what is the best course. They will put the $25 you would have spent on euthanasia to good use.

  6. First of all if its going to the bathroom okay, then thats a good sign. Secondly, you can buy nursing bottles and formula for the kitten at a pet store, not to expensive either. The mommy kitten isnt gonna take care of the kitten because she knows the kitten is "different". Take some gauze or a small ace bandage and wrap the paws as if they were straight, with the pads down(as if the kitten was gonna walk). And see how the kitten does. I am against euthanasia as well, unless I cant absolutly do anything else! There is a chance that the paws could be just broken and maybe you can heal them by wrapping them. You would def know if it was a broken back. Give the kitten a chance! If you dont see any improvement with 2 to 3 weeks or if the health declines then you need to do something more darastic(sp).
