That cannot be combed out and you cannot get out with your fingers. I was just wondering. If I cut it out will her hair grow back in that spot? I am figuring that it probably will as my mom has a dog that they cut her hair all the time and it's hair always grows back, but obviously a dog and cat aren't the same. She is not a "long hair cat" p***e, not like a persian but she her hair is semi long. Please help.

  1. Yes, if you cut it out the hair will grow back.

Be careful using scissors on a cat though.  I would suggest going to the school supply aisle & buying scissors for small children.  They have blunted edges and aren't crazy sharp, but they're sharp enough to cut through cat hair & if the cat jerks the ends won't stab her.

Another suggestion is a razor comb.  You can buy them at beauty supply places.  It's just a comb with a razor up near the handle.  If your cat likes to be brushed this may be easier for you than cutting it out.  It will take some time to get the entire mat out but your cat may be more comfortable with it.

  2. Yes cut it out carefully close to the skin with scissors that don't have very sharp pointed ends (ask someone else to firmly hold the cat while you do it).  It will grow back.

If it's a very large mat the vet will probably have to do it.  Semi longhairs need very regular grooming, but knots can still happen - they're usually underneath the cat or on the inner thigh area.

  3. My cat had the same problem and so did my sister's dog. My sister's husband used his mustache trimmer to slowly shave it off the dog and it works the same way for a cat. I, personally, use the medical scissors which you can buy with any beauty kit. They're small and metal but with a sharp end (I distract my cat with a can of tuna or some food then try to cut it out). You can also call your local pet store, pet supply, or even vet and ask them what would be best to use... even though they will probably try to sell you something that is very expensive. I'm sure it won't be the first time you use it though. But yes, if you cut it out, the hair will grow back. My cat had a wound for about two months and his hair grew back over the scar... so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. Good luck!

  4. pet shops may be able to supply you with a rotating tooth comb - they are great for removing mats, just slide the comb under the mat and one quick tug removes it.

  5. dont cut it with scissors!! the skin gets pulled into the mats and you can cut them. its best to use a shaver/trimmer. and slowly with the grain of the hair shave the mat off
