For some time now, my cat has had one clogged nostril and mucus coming from that one nostril (yellow, not watery) has been very wheezy. She seems in good spirits, seems to have her appetite and is overall in good health. I took her to the vet last week and he put her on antibiotics, however its been 6 days now and I really haven't seen improvement. I'll take her back before her antibiotics are done per his instructions, however until then, I was wondering if anyone had some information on what might be going on for her.

  1. upper respiratory infection, she needs antibiotics.  see a vet

  2. A foxtail stuck in her nose?

  3. It does NOT take 2 wks for antibiotics to start working, more like 48-72 hrs!  If you've had your cat on antibx x1 wk, and the cat is not visibly better, than the antibx is likely not the correct one for the infection (it sounds like URI--upper respiratory infection).  Even though your vet likely put your cat on a broad spectrum antibx, one that's commonly used for uri's, sometimes the bacteria turn out to not be sensitive to certain drugs.  Your vet should do a culture and sensitivity of the discharge, which will tell him/her if it is indeed a uri, what bacteria is causing it, and what antibx it's sensitive to, and then can prescribe the appropriate antibx.  It also could be asthma, for which you don't need an antibx, hence the reason why you aren't noticing any difference.  You would then need an entirely different spectrum of drugs to treat feline asthma.  However, with a yellow discharge, it sounds bacterial in nature, and my best educated guess is that your cat is on an antibx that the bacteria are resistant to.  If it is indeed bacterial, and once you have the cat on the correct antibx, then you should see the discharge go away or lessen within 48-72 hrs.

  4. Usually antibiotics take up to 2 weeks to start working. It sounds like an upper respiratory infection and hopefully it will clear up soon.
