My cat has pee in her blood and antibiotics are not working. What should I do now?

I have a female cat just little over a year old now and she has been peeing blood for awhile and straining. She gets in the litter box constantly. I took her to the vet awhile back and they said there was and infection so they put her on antibiotics for 2 weeks. They helped but it came back with in a few days of the antibiotics ending, so they vet tried a different antibiotic that she has almost finished now. I think it has helped a little but there is still visible blood in her pee. I'm taking her back in in a few days. They are going to want to do Xrays to see if there are stones, and a culture and sensitivity test. That will run about $500 by itself. Money is an issue for me but I also want my kitty to get better because I love her so much. My question is does she need the xray and the test or should I do one first and then go from there? If so, should I choose the xrays or the test? Any other suggestions? I'm not entirely confident in this vet either, but I can't really switch now. Please help my kitty.

  1. Well, back when I had this happen to our kitty we gave her tomato juice. Yes, tomato juice. The vet told us to give it to her, and I was surprised that she did drink some and it did help her. Hey, you don't have much to lose by trying it out.

I just looked this up for you though...it says you need to try and keep kitty hydrated with water, and limit stress as much as possible ( ex: kids who pull tails, dogs who chase etc)

I hope kitty feels better soon!

  2. Sounds like she has crystals ...

They keep trying and trying to empty the blatter.

go to the helth food store and get some cranberry pills.  Poke them down your cats throat (some are around O this big)

It will help really fast but IF THERE ARE SOME CLOGGING THE URINARY TRACT... then they need to be cleared out.

I would call another vet... I have NEVER had xrays for urinary crystals!

what they do is just put a cather up the urethra.

THIS WILL KILL HER SO YOU MUST GET IT TAKEN CARE OF.

There are some groups that also will help with vet costs too.

    hope this helps.

Oh and from now on put a couple of drops of lemon in her water... to make it on the acid side.

  3. i would deff call the vet and tell the antibiotics are not working see what they say tell them some of the suggestion that were brought up see if they agree good luck with the poor kitty

  4. I am sorry for your poor kitty.  I have had male cats with bladder infections that did respond to antibiotics.  I also have had a female  calico that started having a few 'accidents' on purpose in front of me. The vet put her on several series of antibiotics, but that never seemed to work. Then she started having blood in her urine, we did antibiotics again and again.  Finally we did have culture and Xrays done. Or perhaps it was a sonogram.    Culture was negative.  But the xray or sonogram  showed a large bladder tumor.  Surgery was possible, but the tumor was so advanced and the cat was 18.  It has been years since she passed, but I still miss her and wish that I had known to ask the vet to investigate more than a bladder infection.  If I had, I would have  proceeded with surgery to remove the tumor when it was still small and the margins of the cancer were not compromised.
