Question:

My cat hisses randomly?

My kitty hisses out of the blue. He'll get up from a nap, shake his head and then hiss. Or be walking, stop, and then hiss at the air. It isn't directed at a person or another cat so I'm wondering what's going on. He has ear mites and most of the time when he hisses is when he's been scratching his ears or shaking his head. Could that have something to do with it?

Thanks for your thoughts.

  1. It could be. Some cats can be very vocal about what annoys them. Make sure you get the mites treated--ear mites can do a lot of damage if they aren't.

Even if you can't afford typical medication for it, you can use vegetable oil instead. We were told to use it for our dog because the regular medicine they use to treat ear mites was bothering her ears worse than the mites. The oil cured them right up, and it doesn't smell horrible.

  2. The ear mites are probably the cause of the hissing.  However, I have a cat that randomly hisses as well, but his hissing is usually due to random shadows or something I wouldn't normally notice.

Talk to your vet again and ask if there are any treatments that could do a better job at alleviating his discomfort.

    Hope that helps. :)

  3. the sound of them walking on his ear drums could be doing it or he's just a silly kitten i'd get them treated anyway as soon as possible they r very annoying for the cats and if u cant afford the vet i clean my cats ears a couple times a week with a mix of vinegar and water on a makeup pad
