Question:

My cat is half wild... is this going to be a problem?

I have raised my cat, Tommie since he was 2 days old. The owner of the mother[who lives in the middle of bob-cat country!] said she knows that her female cat bred with a bob-cat [or wild cat]. The mother died the day after birth, and because I was voluntering at the local animal shelter, she brought the kitten to me. I bottled fed him and raised him to become the sweet 1 yr cat he is today! He is truly my baby.

He has a different body shape the most cats and although I don't see it, everyone says he is a really big cat.. He is nuetered, so maybe that is why he is sweet. He doesn't like other people, but has never been mean, he just tolerates them. He lets other people pet him, but loves me and my husband to death, but is EXTRA affectionate to me.

Because I raised him from sucha young age, will it matter that he has part wild (bob) cat in him? Do you think any wild cat instincts will kick in?

Thanks!

  1. any animal that had a wild parent runs the risk of turning out wild itself.  it may still come to you for food but dont be surprised if he feels the need to leave alot or starts acting fierce.  just be content knowing you did a good deed and now hes thriving because of it.

  2. He IS half wild cat and his instincts could kick, BUT because you had raised him, and made him used to humans, he he is to used to being with you and your husband, so you might see it in him from time to time, but he wont grow to be like the wild bobcat

  3. I hate to tell you this, but unless the mother was artificially inseminated or the owner had a PET bobcat, then she did NOT breed with a bobcat. Why not? Because a wild bobcat will happily eat a housecat rather than breed with it!

It is very possible, though, that the mother cat bred with a wild housecat.

As far as him being mean- a lot of cats are mean with strangers. It is just the way that they are! As long as you can deal with it, then you shouldn't have a problem.

edited to add- from your picture, your cat does not look like a bobcat.

  4. you made your album private but i want to see your cat! he sounds unusual... i can't answer you ? though, sorry :(

  5. My opinion is that if he stays in your home, and you've had the success so far, then he's fine. Just as with all wild animals you must be careful of introducing them to people, smaller animals and children but it seems like you have one cool cat!

  6. I think she confused bob-cat with tom-cat. He looks like a fiesty boy, but nothing wild, or particularly dangerous. :o)
