my cat has gone int labour- its just after midnight here in the UK. I am wondering how long it may take as she has been pushing and panting for about half an hour but no kitty yet. My last cat had her first in about 20 mins after she pushed first time...should i be concerned? I'd like to go to bed but she wont let me- or hubby- move away from her- she is on the sofa with the throw and some towels. We lost all our other cats kittens within 3 days of birth just 2 weeks ago so we really dont want this going wrong but it will be hard and expensive to get hold of a vet at this time of night! thanks

  1. To tell you the truth with cats having kittens take time. What I would do is get a box, put something soft in it, put her in an area where it is dark and away from people that way she feels more comfortable and safe for her kittens to be. You need to keep an eye out though because sometimes a mother cat does not take the sack off so in case get some gloves, and another towel to keep on hand in case you have to clean them, then just rip it off, and you have to keep them warm to so wrap them up or put them by there mother. Also you need something to clean out there air way with so get a siringe. After she is done help move the kittens toward her and put them near her nipple to feed. Like I said just help out and keep and eye on her and the will be fine. Trust me I have delivered alot of animals before.

  2. Call a vet, almost all places have emergency vet services.

  3. Make a little cage out of stuff around your house put the cat on the floor with paper towels and towels around her and then put water by her meanwhile call the local vet hospital

My goodness, it's very exciting and scary at the same time isn't it?

I have had multiple litters the last one a year ago, I have also had puppies.  My experience has been that she will know what to do.

The littlest intervention as possible is best.

As for time frame, they are animals just like us....

labour could be 20 minutes, 2 hours or 24.

My cat had kittens last June was in labour for several hours, gave birth to two healthy kittens, we thought it was over and then 3 hours later~

    TA DA  another!

Monitoring the situation would be best but I understand you need to sleep too.

Not to scare you but so you know if you do go to bed, things could obviously happen.

My mother cat tried to jump off the chair with the 3rd kitten still coming out, thank goodness I was there to stop her.

They all turned out fine, but I fear if she had run off like that we might have been less one.

I sincerely feel mother nature knows best though and don't beat yourself up if you need to sleep.

Keep in mind too that she may give birth and then tote the little ones off to an unknown location.

You may consider trying to make her comfy in a smaller room, maybe like the bathroom with food, water and a litter box.  This way you know where the new family will be in the morning :)

Best of luck to you, I hope all goes well! Sincerely, Trudi
