My cat's name is Homer. He's 13 years old. I'm really scared that there could be something wrong with him and then I won't be able to help him. I care about him so much. He hasn't been to the vet in over twelve years. I'm only 11 so there's nothing I can do about it. My mom refuses to take him to the vet and she always say "oh there nothing wrong with him." He's old! I'm so scared D: Help me.

  1. Other than age, has Homer had any other symptoms of illness that you've seen???  Cats can live a very long, long time.

  2. If he's an indoor cat and seems healthy I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a cat Sydney and stopped taking her to the vet after she had a horrible reaction to a shot. She was indoors and we had dogs that were healthy and vaccinated. She lived to be 17.

If you fear he's sick he needs a vet. 13 is old but he could have a few more years left in him.

  3. Is your Homer eating a lot more then usual? Peeing a lot? Drinking water like he can't get enough or more then you normally see? He is acting differently then normal?    Ask your mom is there anything you can do to earn some money so Homer can go to the vets for a check-up. In the mean time as long as he is being his normal self, eating drinking water, pooping and peeing no more or less then he usually does try not to worry to much. It is good you care so much about Homer! Good luck with your mom!

  4. Check with your local "Humane Society" for their clinic days. They will give your kitty a good going over for a nominal price but you will have to sit in a long line with your kitty in a carrier until you are seen.

Tell your mom you will agree to sit in that line all day if you have to to get Homer looked at.

Google "Humane Society <your zip code>" for more information and here's the best to you, a very smart person and your lucky cat Homer!

  5. Ask your mom exactly what she means by 'there's nothing wrong with him'. Ask him what condition his teeth are in,and his kidneys. She doesn't know.

I'm not saying there IS anything wrong with your cat, very likely there isn't. But a cat should be checked by a vet once a year, especially once over the age of 10. Fact is, people do NOT recognise when problems are starting in their animals - a neighbour of mine recently said 'oh well cats do prefer soft food as they get older don't they' - well YES, if they're getting dental disease ya wally!!

Explain to your mom that it's best to catch problems early, and the only way you can do that is by annual chats with your vet about your cat and his habits. Tell her that is responsible pet ownership. Tell her you don't want to become one of the people begging for help on Yahoo when worried about your cat, tell her you want to build a good relationship with a vet so that you've got someone proper to turn to if and when the cat gets ill!

So sorry you have to be the adult in this case. My parents were the same. My cat got lucky and lived to 18 but it was no thanks to them let me assure you.

  6. I wouldnt worry my cat is nearly 20 years old. i always worry about her but the truth is she is very old and she is just slowing down and so is homer. so dont worry his time will come and there is nothing you can do to prevent it.
