My cat is "throwing" his dirty litter?

My cat just started throwing, or tossing, his dirty litter out of the litter box and on the walls. The litter box is a cube, so its completely covered, and I don't know how to make him stop. He never use to throw out the dirty litter, I clean the box at least every other day.....any advice?

  1. Cat's are very tidy animals. A dirty litter box will drive kitty nuts.. and even when you change the litter regularly, it still smells unpleasant to kitty. Best approach =

    * Use a good quality "clumping" litter - that way, it will even clump up urine so it can be removed

    * Scoop any hard matter (ie dried lumps) on a daily basis

    * Replace litter weekly. At the time of replacement, give the box a good wash (using a dash of bleach to remove any residual germs/odour)

... and if all else fails (ie kitty is a determined "flicker") replace your current litter box with one of the newer designs that have an inward curving lip. That should solve your prob... good luck ;-)

  2. You should clean the box every day if not twice a day...he's throwing the dirty litter out because he wants it out...most cats prefer a very clean place to do their duty....you're lucky he isn't going outside the box in protest.....You may need to have him checked by a vet to make sure he doesn't have some sort of kidney or bladder problem, but try making the litter box cleaner....perhaps change the whole thing instead of just scooping out the waste so he'll have fresh litter change.....would you like to use a toilet that has 2 days worth of waste products in it???? I don't think so....

  3. Cat's are very tidy animals you may need to clean it more i clean my cats box's to times a day oh do you have more then one cat of so they like to have there own  box

  4. Me and my cat had a love hate relationship because of this!

What I found was a litter  box, that has a door on it. It wasn't too expensive. The cat could go in, and the litter stays in now (except for a couple little pieces stuck to his paws).

    Works like a charm!

  5. it may be because he just wants to dig or it may be that he is doing it by accident

  6. How clean is the box itself? is there a filter in the top that needs changing? How old is the box? The odors can build up if not cleaned properly. I would take everything out and soak it in some bleach water for 30 mins then rinse in plain water thoroughly if the box is older than 3 months. make sure any filters are replaced and last, if none of that works then it may be a quirk you cat has developed. Plus replacing the litter box may be an option.

  7. my cat simon "throws" his litter too. he kicks it everywhere so we keep an old towel under it.
