my cat started throwing up and it looks like her food and i'm not for sure but it looked like she threw up p**p. I don't know if i should take her to the vet or if it's just her food making her sick? When she was a kitten she threw up a little but i switched her food and she stopped. What should I do?

  1. If it looks like p**p it's probably hairballs, you may want to switch to a food that helps with this.  My cat started throwing up her food about once a day last week. This has progressed to every 20 minutes as of last night.  She has an appointment in less than an hour at her vet, I'll let you know what we find out.

  2. Cats can vomit because they ate too fast or didn't chew (my cat is guilty of both). And hairballs can cause it, too.

There is a very good chance that the "p**p" you saw in her vomit is actually a hairball. There are some over the counter meds you can get for this. They have a toothpaste consistency and you put a pea sized bit on the tip of the cats nose. They l**k it off. Make sure you're feeding a quality food and brush her often. This will also help if it is hairballs.

If the vomiting continues you or she begins to deteriorate (no appetite, lethargic, feverish) get her to a vet immediately.

  3. She could be allergic to something in the food.  Check the first four ingredients because they are the main ones.  If there is corn becareful.  It could also be hairballs that have caused her to throw up.  If it lasts a couple of days I would take her to the vet.

  4. Take a closer examination of what you said looked like p**p as I suspect you will find this to be a large hairball. Is your cat a larger one or have long hair? I had one cat that was part maine coon(large and long hair and when I first got him he had to large and long hair balls. A weekly brushing as needed (especially in the spring when they are losing their winter coat) and a hairball preventative(Laxatone tuna flavored) is a favorite among my cats available at your local vet. If she continues to throw up or isn't eating or acting lethargic(no energy) I would suggest taking her to see your local vet as its always best to err on the side of safety.

  5. This could be several reason:

    a) you recently switched or altered her diet

    b) topical cream or spray on her fur

    c) she's stressed out (any recent change lately)?

It's not a medical alert when cats throw up, but if she keeps it up and your worried, take her to the vet.

  6. she should be fine. if she keeps doing it take her to the vet

  7. I could not understand your question properly. (Unsure if you are saying the throw-up looked like her food, or p**p, or both.)

If your cat is throwing up what looks like her food, then the most likely reason is that she is eating too fast. One way to prevent this include putting a golf ball in the middle of the food dish (the cat eats slower, because they have to eat around the ball).

When she threw up and it looked like a p**p, sounds to me like a hairball (furball). It is normal for cats to produce them.

If your cat is throwing up regularly, then I would recommend seeing a vet. If furballs are a persistant problem, there is petromalt(also laxatone) - a gel, that helps the cat excrete them. There are also cat foods designed for furball control.

Brushing a cat regularly to remove excess fur can also help if furballs are a problem.

If this has been an isolated incident, then I think it is just a hairball & you have nothing to worry about. Throwing up occasionally isn't unusual for a cat, as this is their normal mechanism for expelling furballs. As long as her activity levels, appetite and litterbox habits are normal, I don't think there is cause for concern at this point.

Have you changed her food recently? Sudden changes in diet are to be avoided, and can cause tummy upsets.

    Hope that helps.
