My cat was laying next to me, but all of a sudden she was making her throat and mouth move like she was going barf. She didn't. Then all of a sudden she jumps down and lays on the carpet. She looks fine, normal but I pet her and baby talk her and she struggles to croak out a meow! She usually meows REALLY loud even if you call her name or walk past.

Is she congested? Because she sounds horse like she has mucus (I now TMI) in her throat or barf stuck..I know that's pretty gross but I am desparate.

I know it's not life threatening but I want to know just in case I need to take her to the vet Tuesday. Hopefully it's not life threatening, she is the best cat I have ever had along with her brother =[

  1. it may have something in his throat but hes probably ok but you might want to take him to the vet

  2. Sounds like your cat is trying to cough up a fur ball. Try giving her some Petromalt or a tiny dab of Vaseline to help make it pass.

  3. She may have a cold or an infection. Could be pneumonia. She may have swallowed a sharp object or string. Watch her closely. If she starts vomiting, fluids or becomes lethargic she will need to see a vet right away. Take her temperature. It should be between 100 -102 and no higher.

  4. possibly just a large hairball.  treat with butter mixed with Crisco if you don't have hairball meds on hand.  if not better in 24 hours, see vet.

  5. If the cat is coughing it could be asthma.  Usually though, with asthma the cat will cough here and there and become more frequent over several months.  The vet will do a chest x-ray to check for asthma and then prescribe a bronchio-dialator and prednisone to help control the asthma.  If the cat sounds REALLY congested and has difficulty breathing, I would consider going to an emergency vet if you can afford it, or an emergency appointment.

Another thing to check is to see if she has a string attached to her tongue going down her throat or some other visible obstruction.  Did she get into some kind of poison or poisonous plant?

    Good luck!
