My cat keeps hiding her kitten, is she rejecting it?

My cat gave birth to 2 kittens yesterday, one of which unfortunately died. I woke at 5am to see 2 kittens under me bed and the mother growling, i picked the kittens up to place them in the nesting box to find out they were both stone cold and the one had died. As soon as i moved the live kitty away from the dead one mummy cat immediately started cleaning and feeding the kitten. She has been a fantastic mum but to today she moved the kitten out of the nesting box, put it elsewhere and left it there. She came back about an hour later ... She has done that a few times today.

To start with she would not leave the kitten, now she appears to be leaving it a lot.

I have been taking them upstairs at night in our bedroom, i'm thinking i should let her stay downstairs where she wants?

I have avoided handling the kitten as much as possible but I have handled when taking it up and down stairs...

Please - anyone who can give me advice i would greatly appreciate it.

  1. Usually when cats do that it's because they want to protect their kittens so they hide them thats what i think your cat's doing, you should put her in a room where she can stay with the kitten a lone, make sure it's warm, has food, water, a bed etc, come and check up on her and her baby every now and again to see how their going, leave her in there until the kitten stops feeding from it's mum and then let them wander around the house (you can take them out sometimes too they don't have to be in there 24/7)

I hope this helps, good luck!
