He doesn't want to go outside during the day, and he'll go outside during the night, but only for 20 minutes at a time and VIOLENTLY scratches at the door to get back in. I'm not getting any sleep! Help!

  1. put him in a cage or get a dog.

  2. Don't let him sleep in your room, he'll get used to it.

  3. Well you do know that cats are nocturnal right? This is normal cat behaviour. The best thing for you to do is shut your bedroom door and not let him in. It might take a few nights of him howling at the door to get to you, but he'll adjust.

Why are you trying to change his biological clock?

  4. awww.. cats rule! he wants to play ball or just be himself(cuddly cat) if not, then put him in a clsoed room with his food, water and litter box

  5. Don't let him out during the night.  That's what I do with my cat and she just goes out during the day instead.  Close your door so he can't get in and ignore the meows, it will stop eventually!

  6. If you insist your cat go outdoors, get a pet door. I personally do not condone outdoor cats because they can get into a TON of trouble, more than just keeping you up at night.

If your cat is walking all over you at night, just lay still and don't pay any attention. He will eventually get the idea that you won't get up to play chase with him.

  7. Indeed, sleep deprivation is a serious issue when your cat keeps waking you up every 20 minutes.  I've been in your situation before.  But there are ways to train cats to adapt to our schedule.

Is there any way you can play with him more during the daytime?  Or have someone to come over & play with him during the day?  Cats are naturally nocturnal, so you do need to find a way to prevent him from sleeping so much during the day and train him to have a regular nightly sleep pattern as yours.  If you can't make him play during the day, then at least play with him earlier in the evening to tire him out by your bedtime.

Here are some links for training your cat to sleep at night:

  8. try feeding him some wet food at night before you go to sleep cats usually are content and will fall asleep after a good meal or try playing with him more through out the day with toys to tire him out so when you sleep he will sleep i always usually try both and my cat she sleeps through the night she usually would keep me up but not anymore i hope this helps good luck

  9. Your cat is bored and not getting the proper exercise during the day.

I adopted a kitten and had this EXACT problem.

Cat's, like humans, need to wear themselves out in order to be tired at the end of the day, unlike adult humans who have a sleep schedule, cats are born nocturnal but will sleep randomly at small intervals and never need a full eight hours to keep up the pace.

You need to, or have someone able and trust worthy, to play with your kitten a lot during the day, if you must, get another cat.

Sound crazy? Well, so does not getting any sleep at night.

You can needs to tear around, chase things, be curious and play fight all day long so that by evening he'll be so worn out he'll sleep a little longer and give you peace.

You also must must must place his food and litter in your bathroom and close the door in the evenings so you can sleep.

He'll meow, and scratch all night until he gets that your not going to play with him all night.

After a few weeks he'll settle into a schedule matching yours, he'll understand better that you need to sleep and he'll sleep more too.

The second cat idea is the best route however, because even though cats are independent they need attention and get lonely too.

Having a kitten for him to sleep beside will quell his fears and calm his nerves, and yours too!

    Good luck!

  10. try and change there routine. keep the catflap open during the day and when you get home keep it closed. if he start moaning to go out try and distract him by giving him a treat or by playing.  Hope this helps
