Question:

My cat needs to gain weight?

She was the runt of the litter, so she is naturally small, but she is very thin. She doesn't have worms, as we have taken her to the vet on a number of occasions.

She likes the food we give her, and we give her plenty so she won't run out.

We have made sure she is not lactose intolerant, and we give her a choice of milk or water.

We even feed her in a seperate place from the other cats, so they won't eat her food.

However, she is still very thin and after about 4 months of trying to make her gain weight, she just isn't

She is very active at night, and we live in the country so she will get a lot of excersize.

we have also tried feeding her some of her favourit human food, like sweetcorn and scrambled egg,

but, as with her regular biscuit food, she will have a little, then walk away, and repeat this process throughout the day.

Does anyone have any tips on how we can help her to gain weight?

perhaps i should leave some food where she normally sleeps outside?

many thank

  1. there is special food you can get online which helps fatten her up do some research online

  2. Well you've done all the right things getting her thoroughly checked out by the vet.  I agree with the above - try canned wet food too.

Top up biscuits in the morning and continue to allow her to graze on these throughout the day, then also give her some canned wet food (in jelly or gravy), about 1/4 can per serving each evening. My cat loved this!

I would advise not leaving extra food outside, just because you will attract all manner of other animals to it, like hedgehogs, other cats etc! Also I heard you're not really supposed to give cats milk as they cannot digest it properly - it could make her ill. (But a tiny amount occasionally is ok though as a treat  :-)  )

If this still doesn't work, it's back to the vets.

  3. You say she is very active, which means she is obviously not ill.  She  likes eating and has no problem with it. Maybe it is just her natural body type.

If her weight issues cause her to become ill, i think that is the time to worry, but not if she isn't experiencing problems.

  4. science plan - kitten food

our vet said itll help as our cat skinny too

  5. because she is active she will be burning most the energy not saving it as fat.as her bones are growing other parts might not so u reali need to feed her.

try giving her full fat milk.

or spending some time with her inside where she willnt be so active

  6. Perhaps you should offer her more palatable food, like wet canned food. Or try 'free will feeding', where you leave dry food out all day so your cat can eat whenever she feels like it. (If you do this, no wet food! It spoils easily!)
