My cat constantly puts pieces of food in his water bowl. When I give him a fresh bowl, he doesn't drink until there is food floating on top. I am wondering if anyone knows why this could be or has seen/heard of this before??

Thanks in advance!

  1. I'm not sure but i remember seeing this on google about cats. you should find your exact answer their. If i find it i'll edit it and repost it for you

  2. Maybe his food is too dry or maybe he likes flavored water

  3. my cat puts her toys and anything she can find in her water bowl. I've found alot of her toys floating in there...they have drank dyed water and jolly racher cherry flavored water

  4.   I have three cats and only one of them used to do this.  She did this for years.  She would not eat the food in the water and the others would not even drink the water with the food in it.  My remedy:  One separate water bowl for all three cats that I placed far away from their food bowls.  She never did it again and is just fine!

  5. hahhaa.. smart cat.. since water in transparent , the floting food is his guidline where the water leval was.

  6. he is maybe having dental problems and cant eat the hard food or hes just wierd let him do it and only change it when it starts to mold my cat pics her food out of the bowl and throws it on the floor i had one cat that wouldnt eat crumbs they all have their finnicy habits try giving him teeth strenghtening treats he may have tender teeth

  7. He just likes tuna flavored water.

  8. Cats are funny critters

  9. my cat used to do that. ^_^

  10. My cats do this too, and I asked the vet and he said that some cats just do this to see it float, some use it to judge how deep the water is (esp if you are using a big water bowl).  Its annoying but its just a quirk that your cat has  :)

  11. he mite like he food wet not dry

  12. My cat does that sometimes, just that she didn't put it into the water deliberately, the dry cat food was more of being accidentally "pushed" over to the water bowl when she's eating/l*****g up the dry food (coz I am using a two column bowl, one column for dry food one for water). Whenever I saw food floating I will take it away, and she will "look" at me, beats me :D

But I never really saw her drinking that water whenever there's food floating in there, who knows, maybe she thinks it's weird. :P
