Question:

My cat "steals" kittens?!?

I have 2 female cats that had kittens at pretty much the same time. One cat had 3 kittens and the other cat had 5 kittens. The cat with 3 kittens is constantly "stealing" the other cat's kittens and putting them in her basket and trying to nurse them. No matter how many times I take them back and put them with the original mother, she still does it. Is this normal?! Should I just let it go?

  1. Your cats have mothering instincts apparently. If the kittens need milk it would probably be best to let their ''real'' mom to nurse them unless  your cat can still give milk. And if the real mom is fine with it then just let it be.  It might cause trouble possibly if the other mother catches her because most mom's will do anything to protect their baby's so just be aware.  Thanks : )

  2. this is perfectly natural. i had the exact same situation. a mother with less or none will do this, especially if the mother with more has problems nursing. just keep tabs on them at all times. as long as the mother with 3 kittens doesn't hide her "stolen treasures" away from you, or put them anywhere dark or cold, or anywhere far or in anyway dangerous, everything is fine. however, continue to replace the kittens anytime you catch it, especially if the other mother is getting anxious about her kittens. if the stealing mother hides hte kittens in bad places (anywhere not in her basket or protection) keep the litters separate and don't let the mother get at the other kittens.

  3. its totaly normal !! see if they will keep all their kittens together, they'll take turns nursing them.

  4. As long as the other mother is fine with it let it go and leave them alone.

  5. yes if the moms r fine w/ it let it be!

  6. There isn't any harm in this kitties behavior. As long as the other cat has no problem with it.

  7. hahahah,, i dont think there is anything wrong with this. ive had the opposite where the mama cat refuses to feed any kittens that arent her own, so i dont think its that big of a deal. maybe just call a vets office and see what they say abou it, but its probably fine.

  8. She probably thinks that those other kittens are hers and she is just trying to take care of them. I really wouldn't worry about it. I would worry though if the kittens weren't being taken care of. They are lucky to have two mommies...means twice as much milk. :)

  9. i think you should just let it go.

I mean as long as they are getting nurtured by one mother they should be fine.

and as long as the other cat doesn't mind everything will be good.

    hope i helped!

    good luck!

  10. This is normal... My cats did the same thing.  I also had some hamsters that did that too, but when I put the litter back with the real parents - the hamster parents ate them.  =\

I'm sure the real mama-cat wont eat her kittens though.

    Good luck!

  11. I had two cats give birth 3 days apart. One had 5 the other 4. The one with 4 would steal all but one and it didn't seem to bother the other mama cat. I got a huge box put 3 fluffy towels in it with all the kittens and both of the mamas. They were all happy with that. Maybe you could try putting them all together. That way all of the kittens will have a chance to nurse. Good luck.

  12. Yes, it's totally normal. Unless the mom or kittens have a problem with it, let the kitten-stealing mommy have her way.
