Question:

My cat wakes up meowing loud, does he have a problem?

I have a 9 y.o. Persian, and in the last year he started to wake up sometimes (mostly at night) meowing VERY loud, and he keeps it for a little while, and then goes back to sleep (he doesn't even get up). He's never done it before, but it's being very common in the last year. He's calm when awaken, and very playful at times (he loves run all around!), he's affectionate, but not demanding. He has no harm or disease (I take him regularly to the vet).

So why does it happen?

I wonder if he's having nightmares, but why he's having it so frequently in the last year? He haven't had any trauma, not that I know... Or is it because of his age? I don't really know, and I worried because his meow is very heartfelt.

Please, I'd like to have an idea of what might be going on, or a site that have some information about it.

Thank you.

  1. Howling at night is most often a sign of pain or discomfort, particularly heart issues. Many vets and owners will shrug it off as 'old age'. At 9 years old, your cat is entering its twilight years and a yearly vet exam is recommended, including a blood test and a heart check. This is important, because the common diseases in elderly cats, namely kidney failure, diabetes and heart disease, are managed quite easily if detected and treated early.

  2. My Cat meows loud in the morning as well. A lot of older cats do this when their joints and things hurt in the morning. My cat is 13.

  3. I have a 12 yr old cat who does the same thing and has done for years.

I always thought it was because she woke up and realised she was alone and wanted some affection.

I dont think its anything to worry about, maybe you could get another cat to keep him company?

  4. no!of course not!thats just what cats do
