My cat was PTS for nothing, i'm devastated :'(? LONG POST BUT A GOOD WARNING!!!!?

My cat became ill, so i took him to the vet immediately. He was a rescue cat so little knowledge from his past was available.

We got to the vet and she took his temp. It was 106. A normal cat temp is 103.

She contacted the rescue i got him from asking them to fax through his history and medical history.

She took him in and put him on fluids immediately, and sent me home. She would call by 4pm to tell me how he is going.

I got a call as soon as i got in from the vet.

She said did a test called a 'snap test' which checks for FIV antibodies.

My cat had these antibodies present.

she said he has a bad fever and might not recover due to him having FIV and it would be in his best interest to have him PTS immediately as he would be suffering and be infectious to other cats.

Devastated i agreed, i didnt want my friend to be suffering. She said she had to do it right away so i didnt get a chance to say by or cradle him as he was given a lethal overdose of anasthetic.

Due to his FIV i wasnt allowed to take him home to give him a burial.

Then today i got a call from the vet apologising. She read my cats notes from his shelter after she had killed him and it turns out that my cat did have FIV antibodies, but not because he had the FIV disease but because he had had the FIV vaccine while he was in the shelter.

He was not a risk to other cats and would have made a full recovery.

the FIV vaccine leaves the FIV antibodies in the blood as it is there to make sure the cat doesnt get the disease.

I read up on this today and it states that a cat without the actual disease and who has had the vaccine will show up as FIV positive in a snap test.

She SHOULD have waited until my cats medical history had been sent to her before she acted.

I am inconsolable and i wanted to warn other cat owners of this danger.

If you give away your pet or rehome it, always let the new owners or rescue know what vaccines the cat has had.

A statement from Edinburgh cat and dog home said that it believes that many cats are PTS unnecessary when the are handed in or taken to vets if they are unwell and have a FIV antibodies positive result from a snap test.

My cat was killed and shouldnt have been just because someone didnt want to wait 20 mins on notes coming through. He had a fever that he would have made a recovery from.

It is time this snap test was replaced by a more safer meathod.

I just wanted to warn other cat owners of this to try and save some hearts from being broken in the future.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss, and thank you for warning the rest of us!

  2. Oh sweetheart I am so sorry - I really dont know what I can say. I can only imagine how you would feel... and I dont want to imagine what it would be like if it happened to my little baby Willow.

Thank you for the warning. This will help people to remember to make sure people know whats going on before a cat is put to sleep.

    Again, I am so sorry.

  3. That's horrible.  I'm so sorry.

I agree.  Make sure no one uses your vet again.

I believe FIP is the same way, kitties will test positive if they had the vaccine.  All vets should know those things.  It's absolutely ridiculous.

  4. I am soo sorry.

there is this website ( i forgot it) were you can share your news about a certain vet and people can see not to go to that vet.

  5. Thanks for sharing your story with us. That is so very sad. I know you loved your little kitty and you were just doing what you thought was best for his comfort by the advice of a trained professional. I'm so sorry. I can only imagine what you must be going through. Don't blame yourself and put all that guilt on yourself. I would look into trying to report that vet for their incompetency. A precious kitty life was lost because of their carelessness. I would hope that in the future they take a little more care in making a decision to end a poor animal's life. Their lives are just as precious as ours. :(

  6. That's horrible :(  I'm so so sorry for your loss.  I wouldn't feel comfortable going back to that vet.

The general feelings on the cat mailing lists I'm on is that you shouldn't even give a cat the FIV vaccine, for that very reason.  It makes them forever test positive for it, and if the cat ever got lost or you ever have to give it away, some ignorant vet down the line might see that.  It's also just sad that so many vets still think FIV warrants an immediate death sentence.

I have an FIV cat, and he lives with my non FIV cats, and everyone is healthy and happy and he should live for a very long time.

So very sorry for you :(

  7. I am very sorry for what happened to your cat! Hopefully, other people will read this post and know what to expect!

  8. Thank you for the warning.  I am SOOOO SORRY this happened to you!!!! I would be PISSED and distraught!  This is why I would NEVER agree to put my animal to sleep like that. I would only do that if they were chopped in half or something horrible like that.

  9. OH NOOOOOO !!!!! <:-(

I AM SO SORRY YOU AND YOUR CAT HAD TO SUFFER LIKE THIS!!!!!

FIV is NOT a Death Sentence!!!!

MANY FIV tests give a FALSE positive!!   The FIV Vaccination will ALSO give a FALSE POSITIVE!!

Even FERAL CATS who have FIV are NOT PTS unless they are definitely horribly sick!!!

That Vet should be SUED for MALPRACTICE!!!!

She NEVER should have taken it into her own hands to euthanize your cat!!! SHAME ON HER!!

You can tell I am hopping mad!!!

As far as I know-- here in the US-- the pet "owner" has to SIGN something that AUTHORIZES the vet to euthanize the pet.

    I hope you do something!!

Again, you have my DEEPEST sympanty!!!

  10. I'm so sorry for your loss. I would spread all over your town not to use that vet. She was very wrong. Shame on her.

  11. That is so terrible!!  I can only imagine how painful it was to lose your cat over something that didn't have to happen.  The vet should have waited!  That is very bad operations to jump to that action!

  12. My heart goes out to you. There are many caring contributors on this site. I will always remember your warning. It is shameful, what happened to your kitty...........lol

  13. I am so sorry for what happened to you, I would immediately file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in your area and contact a lawyer. This happened to me over 20 years ago with a Collie I had. He was "accidently" put down, they did not charge me for the entire time he was there but you CANNOT replace the friend you have just lost. I never sued the vet(I was under 18 at the time and my dad wouldn't let me or help me to do so) but I have NEVER gone back to that vet. The tests are conclusive when they come back and the vet should have been able to tell the difference if he/she had read the results right AND paid attention to the report form the shelter.  Again I am so sorry for your loss. Blessed Be little kitty.
