Help! My 5 month old kitten and my 2 year old cat were the best of friends yesterday morning until I took him (the kitten) to the SPCA to be neutered. I picked him up in the evening but ever since I've brought him back home she's been hissing at him like she doesn't know him. He was only gone for 9 hours!!! Why is she acting crazy and what can I do?

  1. It's okay.. your kitten probably carries the scent of a lot of other animals and probably will until more of the household scent rubs off on him. Your other cat will get reacquainted.. no worries! Just give it time and patience and caution!

  2. your older cat doesnt recognize the kitten because it smells different now...give it a few days or less, and they will be back to normal

  3. Take a used bath towel of yours and rub the fixed kitty with it or rub the hissing kitty with a towel and rub the fixed kitty with it.  The cat is smelling all of the other cats and dogs odors on it.  I heard this time and time again.  Don't worry - This too shall pass.  They will be best friends again.

  5. It's because he smells "funny" to the other cat. Short of bathing the kitten (which I wouldn't do so soon post op), all you can do is give it time. Probably doesn't help that kitten smells like the dreaded vet!!! Keep them seperate for a while, best while the kitten is recuperating from the operation and the other cat is losing it over the vet smell. :)

  6. My family of 3 cats went through this same ordeal just 2 weeks ago.  Was having some work done in my house and although previously warned they need to carry large sheets of sheetrock in, & out went The Mama Cat.  She was gone for about 20 mins. tops.  When i managed to corral her and brought her back in--

Her two offspring went berserk.  They were both hissing and making noises that i never knew cats could make.  I took Mama & kept her in my bedroom complete with food, water, comfort toys & liter box.  Tried to bring her out on 1 hour intervals.  Well, she needed to stay isolated for night.  I put that waterless cat shampoo on all 3 & everything went back to "normal".  Good Luck.

  7. Hey! My all 3 of my baby's did the same thing a few months ago when i brought my baby boy home. But is shall pass, don't worry they all hate the vet :0)

  8. The kitten smells different. Give it a day or so and they will be back to normal.

  9. put vicks on his nose(the crazy one).. this blocks out any smell from other animals, which will hopefull give time for the smell of animal wash away.

remember, don't cover their nostrils, you can even put it on their chin

  10. Your kitten smells different to your other cat and smells of the vet surgery that it stayed at so this is a normal reaction. Once the kitten gets its familiar smell back they will soon be pals again, you can speed up this process a little by stroking the older cat and then transfer her smell onto him by stroking him afterwards. She may also be angry at him for being away for so many hours, shes not to know that he didnt make the decision to go away.

  11. The smell of another place could be your issue. Also another angle...

in the social hierarchy of cats a neutered male is considered to be the lowest status.  A spayed female usually has more status.  I wouldn't worry about it though, give them time they will work it out.  Just be sure to give them equal love.
