  1. My cat only catches outside animals.

I breed rats and having around 50 of them. My cat never touches them! One was out the other day and started eating from a dog bowl where my cat was sitting. The cat was interested, but didn't touch the rat.

If you do get rats, please get two of the same gender. Keeping 2 is no more work than keeping1 and they thrive on the companionship. Just cos there's two doesn't mean they'll like you less. They're just highly social.

  2. a friend of mine uses a spray bottle of water to make her cat mind her.  If she gets someplace she is not allowed she gets a squirt or two till she backs off.  I used that method when i was raising and breeding gerbils.  eventually the two problem cats preferred to stay away than get a little spritz. That's one option

also you can modify the cage with some fine hardware wire around the outside so It is too small to get the cats paws through.

When you have to leave the house for a long period of time, put the rats in a room away from the cat to be sure no one gets harmed.

In time with some patience and a bit of training, the cat will know that your new pet is off limits.  good luck

  3. I have 2 cats and 4 rats. My Siamese is very aggressive and has gone after lizards, birds and what ever else he can get. I have to say he actually pays no attention to any of my rats, even when I have them out of their cage!

Just keep an eye on your cat. You can also put your cat in another room while you play with your rat and when your finished let him out. Neither one of my cats even go near their cage so I don't believe you will have any problems.

  4. You could get a rat.  If you have 2 rooms, separate them first or else Killer will eat your rat.

  5. make sure your rat is in a room and high enough off the ground that your cat wont bother it...

and you should be fine. just don't let them alone together. XD
