My cat won't get along with my new puppy!?

I just got this little maltipoo who weighs 4 lbs. she will get bigger though (8-10 lbs.). She is very nice, friendly, and means no harm to the cat. I brought her home and my cat, who I have had for almost a year) freaks out and goes into this weird mode. My cat is a siamese/tabby and is indoor only so he is very unsocial. My dog was sleeping and my cat came over very slowly and sniffed her nose and then left. Then just a few minutes ago my dog was playing with one of her toys and my cat was under the table watching her. He almost pounced (he did a little jump instead). I have heard that they will tolerate each other eventually, but im starting school in less than a week and can't be constantly making sure that my cat won't attack my dog like i can now. I just really want to be able to trust my cat around my puppy while im gone.

It might be a little expeensive but it works.I just don't know If you cat jumps high or can slide through the gate. You have to find the coorect one.Just do this until you get home from school then take it off.Or until you finish your homework. You don't want to leave them apart for the whole day. Here is the pet smart website.Good luck!
