Question:

My cat won't go in the litter box, why?

I have a 6 yr old neutered male cat. About 2 yrs ago, I added another cat to our home (we already had 2 and that was fine) He started going outside the litter box.

the 3rd cat is no longer with us. this has not stopped Hobbes from going outside the box. We've taken him to the vet, they can find nothing wrong. We've changed boxes, litters, foods, tried toilet training, and Cat Attract. we did all these things slowly each time, and it doesn't seem to matter.

Nothing is working. On top of this, it's also loose all the time.

suggestions?

  1. well i use to have a cat that would go my the front door on the rug   where does he go? you could try put beans in a container and every time you see him trying to go  shake it a put him in the litter box  it may work i hope it does

p.s. or you could use a horn or something like that

  2. There could be a lot of reason why he's doing this but I would need a bit more information :

    - Does he do both of his business at the same place or does he just pee outside of the litter

    - How many litter box is there in the house.

    Here's what you could try

    1) You need as many litter box + 1 as you have cats in the house. Cats are territorial and the litter box is part of that territory. IF the litter box is inside someone else's territory, one cat might not be "authorized" to go there. So you should place litter box on each level in the house

    2) the position of the litter box is the most important thing. Litter boxes should be places in a room, farther from the entrance as possible and placed where cats in the litter box can see the entrance and have a way to escape if another cat enter to chase him. It should be away from places where there is a lot of passing by, away from machines, away from the A/C, heating and air current.

    3) You might not be able to know where your cats would prefers the litter box to be places. So trial and error is good way to do it. Place the litters in different place and you will see immediatly which one will be most popular. Leave it there and move the other ones. As soon as you see a shift you know it's well placed. Most people are telling me that a litter in living room is not something they want and I can respect that but please do not confine the litter box only in one room just because it's not pretty and sometimes stink. By the way avoid closet at all cost.

    4) You need to wash the spot where your cat is going with an enzyme product (found at any petshop) otherwise the smell will attract you cat on going there again and again. You should place a litter box over that spot once clean for a while (a week or two). Once your cat will go in the litter, then you could try to move it to somewhere more suitable for you.

    Good luck
