My cats were meowing outside, so I decided to check it out. there was a bird laying on the floor. I picked it up, and put it in a bowl with a towle. it's in my lap right now. I woke up my dad, who said it was a baby, even though it has feathers. It looks like it's panting, and when I tried to pick it up, it looked like it's left wing was torn off. It opens it's mouth when I get my face too close to it, which I'm thinking that it's hungry.

Then the bat. I decided I would look outside to look for more baby birds that they might have hurt, even though it's like 11:20. I found them looking at a bat. I thought it was a baby, but my dad said it was an adult. It was.. clicking at me, but didn't bite me. It's in a tea jug right now, with the top slightly open for air. The only thing I see on it, is a hole in it's wing. It isn't moving right now, but I know it's alive. My dad said the bat most likely will die.

I just wanna know what to do, and what might happen. Thanks.

  1. You need to get both these animals to a local wildlife rehab as soon as possible. Do NOT handle the bat with bare hands. You should wear gloves if you must handle it.  It is best to put it in a shoebox and put it in a quiet dark place. Birds sleep as night as well...a quiet dark place will help it sleep through the night so you can get it to a rehab in the morning.   Look here for a rehab near you:

Hopefully your cat is vaccinated against rabies.  Bats can carry rabies..but it is not as common in bats as most people think..only about 1% of all bats have rabies..but the possibility still exists..if you are bitten, the bat will have to be killed even if it is not sick and you will have to get rabies vaccines..so PLEASE use caution when handling bats, never with bare hands.

Lastly...please consider keeping your cat indoors where it will live a much longer, and safer life, and it will not be able to kill native wildlife.  Both bats and birds are very important to the ecosystem.

  2. the bird will likely die from internal injuries; they are quite delicate and easily injured.  The bat is something you need to be very careful with as bats can carry rabies.  Do not touch it or hold it.   Any bat that can be caught is either injured or sick.  Do your cats have their rabies shots?

  3. First thing is do not let your cats near the bat, you either.  Bats carry Rabies.  I would let the bat die in peace, and do not use the tea jug anymore.

As far as the baby bird, you will need an eyedropper and some baby Bird food.  You can get it at any pet shop. Taking in account what time it is  you can use a straw with a little watered down milk until you can do different.   When feeding the bird hold her gently in your hand with her back against your palm, put your thumb and pointer finger near her head, her mouth will open.  Using the straw drop a drop of the milk down her throat.  Good Luck!

  4. You need to take your cats to the vet tomorrow to get a rabies booster. Even if they are current on their rabies shot they will need a booster because of the bat.

The baby bird will most likely die. If it still has the mouth response he can't be too old.  Baby birds will open their mouth for any movement. It's a natural response.

  5. They will probably both die before morning, and you should definitely check to see if your cats have had a rabies vaccine.
