about a year ago I got my cat fixed. She is about 4 years old is an indoor cat and was a feral short haired. She is pretty vicious to anyone but my husband and I so i wasn't surprised when they told me they had to shave all four paws tyring to get the iv in to sedate her. They kept trying different places to get the iv in. so anyway, her whole belly and spots on all her legs were shaved. I also got another one of my kitties done at the same time. My one cat is fine- her hair grew back normal in about a month, but the cat in question did not. First off more of her hair came off around all the areas they shaved, not in clumps or anything it just gradually dissapered. She has a light baby fine hair over the areas now but her hair has not grown back and the spots are larger because of the hair that came out. I know cats can gain weight too but I have never seen anything like this. She has just this huge ball looking thing in her bare belly. No where else - it's very defined. She is the same in temperment, but I just wonder what is going on. I only lived in the area where I got them treated for a little while and have no idea of the vets name. Any clue as to what is going on.

  1. My cat has experience with this.  He has been partially shaved for medical procedures and it took forever for the hair to grow back, he had a naked bum for about 8 months.  It finally did grow back, but still is noticeably thinner than the rest of his hair.  He as well has received iv fluids sub-cutaneous (under the skin) for dehydration.  At the injection site (behind the neck)  where he received those fluids a perfect circular patch of hair fell out.  It has never grown grown back, it's been about 6 years.

So I'm guessing some sort of trauma to the hair follicles from the injection, in your case probably a reaction to the spaying.

  2. I use to have a cat that licked the hair off his belly, it was a stress reliever.  He had hair everywhere but on his belly.  Do you notice if your cat licks his belly a lot.  He could be the one keeping his hair from growing back in.  He sounds like an anxious cat so that may be what he is doing.  There is not cure for this.  As my cat aged he stopped doing it an his hair grew back.
