My cats love to sleep in rooms with no air conditioning, why is this?

Hello. I have three cats here in Chicago, IL where it has been another brutal hot summer. My house is old and one part has air conditioning, and the other part does not, so it gets really hot. All three of my cats prefer to be in the rooms with NO air conditioning. Why is that? I know cats are originally from the desert where it's very hot. Does anyone have any input?

  1. Cats like warmth and dislike noise.

  2. It could be partially due to the cat's origin as a desert dweller, but it could also be much simpler than that. Cats are smaller than dogs despite their oftentimes poofy hair and appearance. It's possible that because of their smaller body frame they tend to get chilled a lot easier than you might think and they stick to the warmer rooms to avoid this. The less body fat an animal has on it the worse it is at insulating itself.

    An interesting question indeed!

  3. I'm no expert but I do know that the normal body temperature for cats and dogs is 102. That's four degrees more than that of  human.  Whatever temperature that  is comfortable for people may feel cold to your cats.

  4. Cats do not like blowing air.

  5. I'm not sure where cats are origionally from but I bet the air quality is better even in a stuffy hot room than in one with artificial air. SOmething about the manufactured air is bad I think- I always get throat issues and stuff from my room being air conditioned, although I'm used to it now. When is the last time you cleaned the filter on the AC anyway- the get all filthy and even moldy. My mom was visiting and it occured to her to clean mine and she said it was awful. So I guess that would really effect the air quality right?! Cats are smart, they know better

  6. i agree with michelle or it could be thatthe air con could dry out the saliva in their mouths

  7. Maybe they prefer the heat because it's what their fur is adapted to. Are they long-haired or short-haired?

  8. Cats are descended from desert dwellers and they can withstand much higher temperatures than we can. When I lived in England, our long haired cat enjoyed laying against the central heating radiators which were too hot for me to touch with my bare hands! When I moved to Cyprus, I brought her with me and she quickly adapted to the new climate without any problems. During the summer months here the average temperature is above 40°C and the two cats that I have now spend most of the day time sleeping under my bed. Neither of them is very keen on the air-conditioning and tend to leave the room when I put it on. Oddly enough, our long haired cat seems to cope better with the heat, whereas our short haired one prefers the cooler weather. Perhaps a thicker coat offers insulation against heat as well as cold?  (I've noticed that ladies from countries with a hot climate also have thicker, more abundant hair than those in cooler climates).

  9. Maybe they don't like the noise.  Or it's too cold for them.  I have a cat who's a little asthmatic, as am I.  Sometimes he hangs out by our air filter which blows cool air.  Go figure.
