Okay, so when i first got my cat Patrick, he was five months old and he slept on my bed with my every night. He still does and he is very affectionate. Most of the time he will come up to me and rub my face with his, he like to l**k my nose, and he likes it when i hold his paw, but that's only at night. I have a lot of other cats around my house but when ever i see Patrick i try to pet him or scratch his chin but he refuses to enjoy it and he runs away. Is this because he thinks it's embarrassing because there are other cats around watching or what? please help

  1. You might be right - he may feel like accepting affection cramps his style in front of the other cats.  Does he get along with the others?  Is he trying to be "top-cat"?  If he's trying to assert himself with the others, or if he's often at odds with the others, he may feel too vulnerable when he's being petted, so would avoid letting his guard down until the other cats aren't around.  In a multi-cat house, I've found it's very important to accept each cat's boundaries.  When I try to force them into more affectionate behaviors with me, some of mine end up lashing out at each other soon after, as though to "prove" they're really tougher than that.  It just causes tension.  So, perhaps you'll just have to accept Patrick's affection privately and let him be aloof in public.

  2. Yes you are embarrassing him in front of his Friends. Just like when mothers drop off their kids at school and then insist on giving them hugs or kisses in front of the whole school.

  3. He has a reputation to keep, don't cramp his style...

    Just kidding..

You probably aren't as interesting as his cat friends are...but he loves you, its just when he's outside there are lots of things to do and see .

  4. you are giving him too much credit on having that much of a thought process. patrick is just being patrick.  Cats want our affection on their own terms, not ours, they are weird. the have certain places where they allow you to pet them, and other places they dont feel comfortable, they are very territorial as well, and if could be that he is too pre occupied by what the other cats are doing,  its just part of his personality.
