  1. It could be a variety of things.  I would start by checking the bearings.  Lots of times they can burn up and cause the fan to cease.  That's where I would start.  Depending on the price of the fan, you may just scrap it and buy a new one.  If it's expensive....then you may consider having it repaired, but sometimes the cost of repair is higher than the cost of a new fan.  Do some looking and do some homework.

  2. The motor is eventualy going out...You can cut the power off, put some plastic underneath and spray directly into the motor with a good silicone based lubricant from a spray can..DO NOT TURN THE FAN ON IMMEDIATELY...take and manually by hand spin the blades around for a couple of minutes then let it set an hour..allow for the solvent to dissipate some, mostly the propellent that it uses to propell the lubricant in the can needs to dissipate..then turn it on and it should go..this will give it enough life left to at least last the summer..I have seen them go another couple of years just by doing this every 2 or 3 months...I have done the same with regular floor fans that do this too..
