Question:

My centerpiece idea and not catching anything on fire (lol)?

Our wedding isn't traditional nor is it very formal. We're not really having flowers other than my bouquet and my MOH's. (there aren't any other bridesmaids)

For our centerpieces we've come up with the idea of a large Martini glass filled with purple water. In the water we'll float a small candle(either red, white, or purple). On the table, around the base of the glass, we'll put silk red rose petals. That's all do-able, no problem. But, I wanted to have a white butterfly perched on the edge of the martini glass. What can be used to affix the butterfly to the glass that doesn't look sloppy? What could the butterfly be made of? Aren't they usually made of wire and some kind of material? It will be up out of the way, so I don't think it will catch fire, do you?

Thanks!

  1. How about those battery operated little candles?  I am not a fan of open flames at weddings.  I have long hair and had it catch on fire at a wedding reception.

  2. I think you could use small silk butterflies like they use in some flower arrangements.  I think you can buy them at Michaels.  I would use a hot glue gun to affix it to the edge of the glass and tilt if backward, like it just landed and is perched there.  I think that should be safe.  Maybe you should buy one and do it and try it out at home where you can monitor it for a few hours and see how close the candle gets and how it works.  I think it will be fine though.  Good luck!

  3. I am voting for at least one of the butterflies to go up on flames (if cloth or fabric). The candle will float around- it is too risky if you ask me.

What about leaving out the candle and filling the martini glass with purple beads? or purple aquarium rock? or heck, pieces of purple rock candy and encourage your guest to "snack" on your centerpieces?

  4. maybe sugar glass butterflys like those on this cake (and to keep them on like sugar glue)  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3031/2484... or maybe just glass butterflys (and hot glue)

  5. It would be hard to stik it to the glass without seeing tape or glue.  Maybe use wite and instead of perching them on the edge wrap the wite around the stem and have then floating next to the glass, then no fire hazard!
