Just yesterday we had our A/C working just fine we turned it off when we left the house. When we came back to turn it on It would not start. If i turn the switch to Auto fan and the other switch to cool nothing happens. but when i switch the fan to ON the fan run but it doesn't cool down. From this i know electricity is getting to the unit but i don't know what to look for from here.

I should also add that there are two switches on my thermostat, One for the fan [auto] and [on] and then one for [cool] or [heat] and then off in the middle. When i try to switch it to cool it doesn't seem like it wants to move there. Normally i can just slide my finger and it will move the switch now it takes a little more than a swipe. Also trying to go to heat works just fine its just the cool part that doesn't work.

What can i check before i call a repairman?

  1. if the unit is running and it sounds normal its a freon leak somewhere in your system. if it sounds different you should add additional notes of what it sounds like

  2. Replace the thermostat, instructions on most are fairly easy to follow in you have a little mechanical know-how.

  3. change your thermostat. Try Lowes or Home Depot

  4. Check your breakers, mine has two in the breaker box for the house, one for the fan and one for the AC proper. There are several breakers in the attic and there is also one on the compressor unit out side of the house.

The other option is you have a short either in the thermostat or in the unit. If you do not find or have a flipped breaker it is time to call a pro.
