Question:

My central unit will freeze or pour water inside the house

We just had more freon added & drain pipe is clear & filter is ok. The central unit in the attic will freeze or leak inside while running or pour water inside when it kicks off at night. During the day, it never reaches the 75 it's set at. We have a 5 ton & 1600 sq ft house. The unit is not in the middle of the house, it's on one side & duct work streches to far parts of the house. If anyone can help - Thanks

  1. my guess is u need to replace your evarpotior or  in lay man terms your inside coil not the outside one its hard to know without checking it out i could explain why but it would not make since to u. Also make sure it not over chaged with freon did this just start after the freon was added?

  2. The unit doesn't sound like it is trapped correctly(the drain)or the cap has been left off the trap.

The blower running on the wrong speed will also cause it to freeze and appear that it is low on refrigerant charge.

The blower should be running on high speed and can be checked with an ammeter but you must know the FLA of the blower on high speed.

Maybe it is overcharged because they were Easter egging and loaded it up with refigerant when the problem was really something else.

The indoor coil must be sparkling clean at the air inlet(return) or she will freeze sooner rather than later. You can check it with a mirror and flashlight.

Run the blower all by itself and turn the cool off for 30-45 minutes to completly rid all the ice.

Also if your return is not sized right and is too small your coil will starve of return air and freeze up every so often.

  3. call in a repair man that is your best bet.
