My check was cashed for the wrong amount. Do I contact my bank or the person who cashed it?

I clearly wrote 30.00 in the box and "Thirty and no/100" on the line, but it was cashed for 30.50. (The check is scanned in on my online banking so I can see it.) I know it's only 50 cents, but still. Who do I call?

  1. Contact your bank.

  2. Call the bank. The bank that cashed the check has the responsibility to review the check. You may have some difficulty if your N in no looks like a 5. If there is a difference between whats in the box and what is handwritten the handwritten amount overides the amount in the box. Good luck getting everything ironed out.

  3. Call the bank that cashed it. You are not responsible for that extra 50 cents. The bank that cashed the check is. So if you have a carbon copy, or a scanned copy from your bank that clearly has written on it what you wrote, take it down there, along with a bank statement from you bank saying what was taken out when the check was cashed. They should give you bank your 50 cents. It isn't the fault of the person who cashed it, but the bank that did it.
