  1. Checks are printed by two key companies in the US.  Both companies use similar methods to bind the checks together. The binding is usually a poly-plastic adhesive that is reinforced with tiny cotton threads. The binding is normally pretty resistant to falling apart, but it is meant to come apart when there is shearing pressure put on the opposite sides of the checkbook (which mirrors the natural process of tearing off a check).  To prevent this shearing pressure, put the checkbook in it's protective plastic cover.  The cover is naturally slippery and will help reduce the shearing compared to the paper covers.

The second thing is to get a bigger purse.  If your purse (or other carrying vessel) is too small, then there is a bigger chance that there will be opposing pressure on your checkbook.  If you jostle your purse, you can torque your checks and they start to tear off.  If you have a loose purse, then the items move independently and nothing happens.

Think of a stack of playing cards in your hands.  If you move them around on your hand, the stack just waves around.  If you put your other hand on top of the cards and twist and turn your hands in different motions, you're going to have a mess.
