i got my ex-battery chickens yesterday. they are settiling in ok but two of them have a strange lump in their bum, and the bums have gone bright red. are they getting prepared to lay an egg each, or are they sick? they are eating fine. one arrived with a lump, the other developed it during the course of the evening. they seem fine in themselves.

  1. They are probably holding back eggs because they are stressed from the trip.  I've had ducks do it.  The skin around their rump turns bright red and looks all puckered and wrinkled.  It looks really horrible, but if you just keep them as calm and as stress-free as possible the egg will normally pass on its own within a day or two.

  2. Well, if they are anything like my Muscovy ducks, which are downright ugly to start with, they get things that look like warts & lumps in the egg-laying department, but don't seem to be in any bother about it.

I would think that if you have rescued them from hateful battery conditions, then an improved diet will sort it out.

(Oh, ducks are tricky, but the eggs make a mean omellette)

  3. chickens can have a diseas you should get them chect out by your vet  and dont be suprised if they say thay hav to be put to sleap however some chikens can get like this on a bad diet it causes eggs to get stuck and can cause serius infecshon
