  1. Maybe he doesn't like his "fun group".  He's 3, a 3 year old SHOULD have a 3 minute attention span.  How long is his fun group?  What activities do they do in the fun group?  If it's not something he's interested in, he's not going to participate.  A child is fully capable of sitting through a full disney movie like Cars for example, so he is capable of sitting still and paying attention when it's something he enjoys.  So, why would your doctor want to medicate an otherwise healthy child?  Lose the psych. and the meds.  There is a time and a place for learning, but he's only 3-give him a break!

  2. It is normal for a three year old to have a short attention span. If he isn't enjoying his fun group, I'd take him out of it. Would he prefer something more active? I am a nurse and the grandmother of a three year old. He couldn't sit still at story hour at the library. There were too many fun toys to distract him and he just seemed to young to be there. At home he loves to be read to. I am strongly  against medications for the little ones except for severe problems. I hope that this helps.

  3. If anyone suggests you medicate your son at 3 years of age, you should run very far away.  Lack of attention span is almost always a normal 3 year old characteristic.  You could visit the pediatrician to rule out any serious problems but I would imagine the things you are describing are typical of a 3 year old.

At 3 years of age, there are more appropriate ways to improve his attention span than medicating him/her.

  4. This is for all parents FYI ALERT:

Most public schools DO get EXTRA money per child, that is considered "classified"

Most public schools have a "child study team"/a team of quilified specialists working FOR THEM in their school district.

Once a teacher talks to a parent about (what they consider a problem)they might/can/will eventually ask YOU to sign papers so that this "study team" can evauate your child.

After the evauation they can/might/will ask/tell you that they would like to classify your child.

They(hook you) I mean, get you to do this, by telling you that your child will benifit from smaller, more controlled classes ran by special education teachers.

I have three grown children...1)is married, has 3 kids, runs a state certified day care out of her house, was a cheerleader and was NOT a classified student

                                                    2) is married,has two kids...helps raise4 step kids,holds a 6 day a week welding job...no problems at all...WAS CLASSIFIED in school

                                                       3) Is only 19,quit school at 16,got his GED(scored in the top ten in the NATION!!!!),he went to an auto tech school, graduated with HONORS and landed a job as a service tech ,through the tech school ,before his actual graduation!.........He lives on his own in a condo and supports himself totally and lives in another state 12 hours from home!!!!!he WAS CLASSIFIED in school

I have had a heck of a life/time with the rasing of these children.I would advise ALL PARENTS thta feel thier child has a problem to get help outside of the school system and NO!!!!! to medicatons

I never put any of mine on medications, although it was recommened/almost forced on me!

Stick close to your children and keep your lines of communicaton OPEN ALTHOUGH THEIR LIVES!!!!

If you do have a related problem.....get a # of opions before making a choice!

Change teachers and schools if needed this is your right!

You know your child bettere than anyone else!

Listen to your child....see your child....guide your child.

    Good luck tooo you all!!!!

  5. I am not a professional, so don't take my advice as a prescription of what you should do.  These are just things to think about. I have been an educator for 22 years and have helped raised eleven neices, nephews, and grand neices and nephews.

You have taken the first step by seeking help.  I think the second step is to make sure that you monitor very closely your child's actions at all times and note his levels of activity during different times of day, during different activities, etc.  Try to get a grasp on what is happening when this lack of concentration is happening (ex.  Does it happen all of the time or just after eating certain foods; does it happen when certain people are around, etc.).

I would also like to caution you on having your child medicated on the advice of one person.  I find it disturbing that your psychologist would start out by assuming that after 3 month's observations, your child will automatically be placed on medicines.  That should only be a consideration after the observation, not as a know result before the observation is completed.

  6. I don't believe there is a problem at all. He's 3 years old, it's so hard to keep their concentration at all. If he is having behavioral problems because of it, then I would understand. I would give it A LOT longer and then start worrying about it.

  7. He is three.  I think the teacher has the problem not your son.

  8. Keep him home and do NOT medicate him.

Keep him home and YOU play with him in a quiet manner that he will enjoy.  Spend time with him doing things that he enjoys.  Give him attention and he will give you his.

He does not need medication.  He needs time to mature.  He maybe needs a less stressful situation.  He needs you not a play group.

Keep him home and enjoy him!

  9. Good lord, don't let them put him on medicine! He's three, they all lack concentration at that age. Have him checked if he's seven or eight and only if it's causing issues for him.

  10. Any Idiot knows you cannot expect a 3 year old to stay still for any length of time.

The Teacher needs to find a different profession along with the Doctor.

Anyone that ledicates their child just because they aren't acting like someone else wants them to act is commiting child abuse and should be reported.

  11. It  is too early to draw conclusions.I would not medicate at this age.  We still don't know the long-term effects of these medications.  Giving medicine to calm the child benefits no one except the teacher and the parents.
