Question:

My child gets bruises but he doesn't bump into anything?

He's five years old and he never gets them anywhere but on his legs. He has at least three at a time and they look pretty bad. I never see him bump into anything so why does he get so many bruises? I forgot to ask the doctor at his five year old check up and I'd hate to have to go there and wait in the waiting room for two hours and end up going home with every virus in there while the Dr. tells us that it's common. Does anyone else have this problem?

  1. Your question is wise in several ways.  I agree with you that it is odd to find bruises for no apparent reason.  My copy of "The Family Medical Guide" mentions only a series of extremely frightening causes for mysterious bruises, and I really doubt that your son is a victim of anything worse than "being five years old," so I won't panic you with the details.  It does, however, give only the advice that strange bruises which cannot be accounted for need the attention of a doctor. I agree with you that it is really irksome to wait forever in a doctor's office, exposing yourself and your son to everyone's bacteria, viruses, cell phone conversations, and additional bad manners.  If consulting your doctor is a chore, you should consider changing doctors.  You have a right to be comfortable with your child's medical practitioner, and it seems, for your own peace of mind, you really need to know what's going on here.

  2. He may be bumping his legs and not even noticing it. He's a 5 year old boy, he probably likes to rough house. At the same time, there are some medical conditions that can cause this. I would definitely bring it up to the doctor if you truly don't think he's getting these bruises from bumping into stuff.

Try calling the doctor's office and asking for his nurse. She can run it by the doctor and see if it warrants a trip back or not.

  3. There can be many causes for the bruises. To be on the safe side and to ease your mind. Do take him to the doctor. Take along some desinfectent wipes to keep away the germs. All children get bruises on their legs just because you dont see them bump into anything does'nt mean they are not. The bruising could also be caused by setting his leg against something when pulling himself up onto something ie the sofa or chairs/

  4. Is someone hurting him like hitting him? Maybe a friend or another adult? Well if he is at pre school or kindergarten maybe something happes there .Its common becuz 5 year olds ride bike and stuff. Nuthin to be woried about.

  5. A friend's mom has this problem...she gets bruises by barely bumping something.  She is enemic and has low blood.  I would get it checked if I were you.
