  1. Hi, my nephew had the same problem its not to do with having a handycap more just learning to get a grip - check out this website as you can buy this grips to put on pencils they will make it easier for them.

  2. There are special shaped ergonomic grips that fit over pencils that make it easier for children to hold pencil. Try one to see if they help the situation. If not talk to a health professional.

  3. How old is she? It may correct itself in time. I found that my oldest just needed time to work on it. My younger son does better with the fat pencils.

  4. Dyspraxia. I have it. It means you have problems with motor controll.

  5. My daughter's grade K teacher had the kids doing a lot of cutting with scissors to build up strength in the hands,  that improved my daughters grip a lot.  Using playdough helps to.

  6. Like everyone else said, it depends how old your child is.  If she's 6 or under, I wouldn't worry too much.  However, if she's older than that, it's definitely a problem.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a handycap or dissability.  However, it definitely needs to be addressed.  I have always had difficulties with fine motor skills, and as a child, actually had to go to special after school classes to help cope with them.  The pencil grips listed above are an excellent tool.  However, address this issue with your child's school next year.  They will probably have more resources for her!

    Good luck.

  7. Probably not.  My oldest had the same problem, her kindergarten teacher claimed it was a problem with her motor skills...So we had her evaluated...she is a very tiny, petite person.  When she was five she looked more like barely three, takes after her father's side of the family, small framed and "delicate" looking.  Turns out the pencils were just too large for her small hands.  What can you do to help?  Stop viewing her as handicapped for one thing and let her hold the pencil that is comfortable for HER.

  8. How old is your daughter? If she is in first grade or above then talk to the pediatrician. It might be time for some occupational therapy or she will get behind in school.
