My 5yr old son has intollerances to certain preservatives/colourings etc in food. His symptons include hyperactivity, night terrors, tantrums, lack of concerntration, inability to sit still (main reactions), n sometimes itching, stomach aches(but not oftern). I have him on a diet with no nasty preservatives, and no colouring (160b really reacts with him). When he would have a reaction we definitly knew as he would become glazed in his eyes, talk very loudly, become hyperactive, over emotional, tantrum throwing etc. Although we have noticed a great improvement in his behaviour, after changing his diet in the last 4 months it seems that he is slightly showing signs of an intollerance again?!?! Not as bad as before at all, but enough to be concerned (and mentaly drained from)! Has anyone any ideas? Or has anyone had any similar experiences with there children, or themselves as adults?? I would appreciate any info that could help my son and our family with this? Thanks

  1. By "intolerances", do you mean like allergies?

  2. you probably already have, but cut out all high fructose corn syrups too.   considering he reacts to these things, i would check is sleep as well. my son reacted the same to foods but also had a sleep disorder -we have had him on ferrous sulfate supplements for a year... what a difference.   it might be combo of diet and sleep - they often go hand in hand

  3. I guess he goes to school - does the school understand the problem fully ?

We had this with my son who was almost expelled several times and had to go through a lot of rigmarole with the school as they kept dishing out sandwiches for lunch ( he's wheat intolerant) and then he would be sent home or given detention because of it.

Also you need to discuss it with your son as kids share sweets etc at school and it is difficult to get through to them that a couple of Smarties or whatever could make such a big difference.

Also you might like to check as sometimes food manufacturers come up with New Improved recipie so that what used to be safe suddenly isn't.

It does get easier with age - honest.
