I just noticed, everytime it's raining, he hides inside in his room. It started when "Bagyong Milenyo" (Typhoon Xangsane) struck here in the Philippines. And now, "Bagyong Dindo" (Typhoon Matmo) is right here in the Philippines. All he can do is just hide in his room. Any ideas?

  1. Tell him, that air is fresher during rain, and he will feel happier because raindrops are pushing oxigen down toward the ground level.

I love to take a walk during raintime.

  2. There is a survival instinct that causes many animals to go underground, as in a hill, when a storm with lightning approaches, or powerful wind threatens to blow debris that would cause injury.

We humans tough it out, but we still have that instinct. Best direct that instinct to think through what are the best places to weather a typhoon, and understand why some places like areas likely to be flooded or blown away would be avoided.

  3. You didn't mention his age.. so it would depend entirely on that.. but if he's really young like, 4-8 just explain to him the difference between a simple rain storm and typhoon. Of course he's scared... if he's been allowed to watch the news it can be very frightening to a child to see the devastation. Let him know that rain is great..how it works and why we need it..but also tell him that if there was ever a typhoon you would protect him and keep him safe and to let you worry about it because that's what adults do. They do the worrying for their kids and the kids can go about being safe because mom and dad are they to make sure they are.

  4. I'd just have some good talks with him and let him tell you what he's thinking.

  5. ask him why he's scared. it might be something as simple as a nightmare. or it might be because rain is often connected to sadness. it's probably some weird fear. or maybe just a phase? you'll never know 'til you ask. if it really becomes a problem, see a child therapist. they'll be able to explain why and teach you how to deal with it, and help him get over this thing.

  6. Let him hide and go inside with him to comfort him. Do things to cheer him up too, that will help. Ask why he is afraid while you're at it.
