  1. yes, go to your state or county website and type in "early intervention".  I had my daughter evaluated @ 18 months and they began working with her. She could only say about 3 words at that age.

  2. contact your school district and ask about the early childhood program, first steps, and parents as teachers.

they will send the right people over to evaluate him for free

  3. yes if you have any concerns you should see your pediatrician.  A child should have somewhere between 5-20 words by 18 months.

  4. a child with autism cannot be diagnosed until 2 years of age. Also autistic children tend to excel at one area like motor skills or speach. there is a checklist that you can get and see if she fits into any of them http://www.autism-pdd.net/autism-symptom...   my nephew has aspergers autism and the doctors said he would never fit in or be normal but with my whole family getting involved with his therapy he is now 9 years old in a normal school talking, playing, laughing and getting involved with everybody. I understand your concern and you are a great mother for seeing the early signs and this will be a great advantage for you to start treatment early. even if she is not autistic she can greatly benefit from the forms of treatment that they give small children and it may give her the extra little boost she needs. always remember that you are a great mom and nobody knows what you are going through unless they also have gone through it so let any criticism go in one ear and out the other.
