the pre-school is actually at the public elementary school so it's a little more strict than a regular pre-school. like I said, my child has gotten more sick as the night has progressed. would it look really bad being absent on the second day? so, my question is, should she go to school or stay home?

  1. Absolutely keep her home if she is sick.

I know that it's quite easy to lose sight of the fact that it's less about how it looks to a teacher (or anyone else) than what is best for your child. Of course, I do know that is what is most important to you. If she is sick, then the best message to send to her (and everyone else for that matter) is that her well-being matters most to you. Think how awful it is to have a 102 degree fever, be sick and achy and then have to "perform" at work or wherever. Remember too that being sick uses much of her resources, which are already taxed by a new class, new students, new teacher, etc., etc.

I also really wish people wouldn't send their kids to school sick because then it exposes my daughter, then me and my husband, etc., etc to the same thing. ;)

She's young enough that she doesn't have to (nor CAN she!) learn to suck it up yet. ;) And nobody, not the teacher or director or anyone else, will expect you to send your child to school when she is sick or feeling very poorly. I promise! :)

  2. if she threw up, had a fever or had 'bathroom issues' within the 24 hours proceeding wednesday then she needs to stay home.  or if she can not participate in a normal, active day she needs to stay home.

as far as it 'looking bad'.  my daughter went to the first day of kindergarten adn then missed 2 weeks due to chicken pox.

parents and teachers would rather your child stay home when sick so the other kids and the teacher don't get it.

  3. Please keep her home. You run the risk of infecting the whole class, and she would get nothing out of the day. I don't know what you mean by strict, but no school wants a sick child to be in the classroom. Just call and let them know why she is out.

  4. keep her home if she is sick or can't last the day.  let her get her strength back.

  5. See how she feels in the morning. Sometimes all kids need is sleep.

  6. Your first thing is to see how she feels in the morning, but as a general rule, children need to stay home 24 hours after a fever has died; not including tylonol or medicine to calm the fever.

  7. As a public preschool teacher, I can tell you that if she is honestly sick, keep her home.  If you have the ability to take off work or are a stay at home mom, let her rest.  Nothing is worse than having one sick kid in class on Tuesday and then having 10 sick kids in class on Wednesday.  At that age, kids touch everything and germs spread like crazy.  The first few weeks is really about getting acquainted with school, so your child will not miss much.  In my class, it was hard for parents to keep kids home because it is an underprivileged district and parents can't afford to take off work.  So if you are fortunate enough to keep her home and nurse her back to health, do that. Even if she is feeling better she might not be 100%, and kids that are recovering from an illness are often cranky and tired and don't function well in the classroom.  Hope she gets better soon!
