My two young children's father passed away. I understand that they will get SS benefits but does that mean that they automatically get state funded insurance like the CHIP that so many states have? I have tried to call the offices and I have to wait on the appoinment, I got no info over the phone. I don't want them to go much longer without any insurance. I wondered if anyone here knew or had experience with any of this. All information is appreciated.

Thank you in advance

  1. Each state has different eligibility for their state funded insurance. You will need to contact SS to apply for your children's father's SS benefits and chances are, you will also need to apply separately for medicaid so contact your local Human Health Services or similar dept to find out how.

Or google your state and medicaid-many of the states have on-line applications and instructions on how to submit the applications.

  2. No, they don't automatically get CHIP.  They "might" qualify for medicare.  You're going to have to wait for your appointment, to get state specific information.
