  1. Ask if your school has an installment plan. That happened to me this year too. I made a mistake on my FAFSA and was about to get dropped, but my school has an installment plan. I had to pay half of my tuition in order to keep my classes, but when my financial aid kicks in the school will reimburse the money I paid.

  2. Some colleges and universities have "short term" emergency loan funds available to students - the only way to find out about them is to ask your financial aid counselor directly.

If that option is not available, your only obvious alternative is to pay out-of-pocket, or borrow money from a friend or relative for the few weeks it will take for the financial aid office to reevaluate your aid eligibility. Avoid the temptation to consider using a credit card - make that an absolute last resort solution.

Start with financial aid - if you didn't have income last year, your aid eligibility should actually increase, not decrease, so there's some chance that they might be able to help you out with a short-term emergency loan. As I said, however, only some schools offer this type of emergency assistance, and the funds are often in very short supply.

    Good luck to you!
