  1. hi , short side wing is what is called blind side wing  in nz the opposite to blind side wing is the open side  wing .The open side wing is on the end of the full back line .Being the short side wing is when you stand in the smaller side of the feild, because the full backline lines out on the larger side of the field due to more players .Your  jobs depend on if you are attacking or defending and also where you are on the feild (whos 22m and half you are in)and combinations of each. When on defence from setplay and  secondphase (after rucks and mauls) try to stay as close to the offside line as possible and in line with your opposite. The biggest sin in rugby is for you to tackel a opp plyer about to pass the ball to your opp wing ?what this does is allows your wing to be left unmarked and your teams cover defence has further to run to get (your) opp wing esp in  your  22m as the tryline is so close and leaves it open for them to score ,its up to your  inside backs to driff across to cover after all someones opp is passing to your wing .If you are on attack in there 22m and the ball is turned over quick and they start to run it out its ok for you to come in make a (spot tackel)because they still have 80m to go to the tryline. In defence when the ball is kicked to your fullback run back as quick as poss (both wings should) so they can support the fullback if they get tacked (if they get tacked get overthem)(stradel them on the ground and form a ruck with opp) .You stradel them, bend your knees slightly stand slightly side on and dont stand tall .If you get back fast enough the two wings and fullback should try to counter attack esp if the opp dont follow up the kick .your no is 11 or 14 the fullback is 15 .On attack when you have the ball run fast if you are one on one try  a step on them its easy run straight at them and 7-5m before you get to them you step off your forward leg (you have to step  1-1.5 m side ways while keeping your forward speed ).If you find yourself with the ball any where and you dont know what to do its simple rule 1 if you are isolated(non of your team mates around ) in defence and fear you will get tacked without support kick it out .rule 2 if you are on attack and are getting tacked try to stay on your feet and turnside on to defence and finally end up with your back to them in a maul so your body is between them and the ball (hold the ball on your bellybutton ) .if you end up on the ground make sure your body is between the opp and the ball on the ground try to get 90 degrees to the touchline it prevents people standing on you .

  2. It depends where you are on the field whether the left or right is the short side.

The left winger is No.11, the right winger is no 14.

Click on the link.  In those field positions the 11 is the short side winger, as s/he's not at the end of the attacking line of players, but at the other side by themselves.

That's a great guide, the link I mean.  I just found it after I read your question.  If you click on the position names to the left of the pitch you get a brief description of the role of that player.

    Good luck with your rugby.
