Ok, my cockatiel is going to turn 3 years old August 23rd. So, Is she old enough to breed when she turn three? And if I get another cockatiel (boy) how can I get her to like him so they can mate? Also, If I put a breeding box inside of the cage, would they know thats the time to breed? Can you please help? If there is any professionals or anyone know, can you please help? Thank you!

  1. Yes your bird is quite old enough to breed!!

But before you get her a mate,it is no good trying to breed in a cage!!

Unless it is at least 5ft. x5ft. and I don't think your cage will be anywhere near that, the nest box will have to be at least 12.ins square and at least 15ins, deep.the only other thing is if you want to breed them make an aviary

But first buy or borrow a book on how to breed and look after Cockatiels.

Sorry to have to put it this way,but it is not as simple as you seem to think.

I know because I bred Cockatiels of various mutations for over 20 yrs.

  2. Most cockatiels are sexually mature by 18 months of age, so at 3 years she is definitely able to breed. But I don't recommend breeding cockatiels unless you're experienced (which you don't sound like) or you have the like of an experienced breeder to guide you.

I'd also like you to know that breeding birds commercially (for profit) is inhumane! There are so many good abandoned birds out there in parrot shelters, and breeding these birds worsens the situation for these poor creatures. Visit http://www.avianwelfare.org to find out more on this important issue.

  3. Wow they've been ready to breed since they were practically 6 months of age to 12 months of age so if i were you i would probably get the mate Know! P.S they'll probably figure out it's a nest because they'll let there curiousity get the better of them and investigate! P.S.S You should probably get an incubator because there unable to hatch without it trust me!! I've had mine for 9 yrs!!!

  4. They breed in winter and I know with parakeets you just leave them totally alone with each other and that does it.  Treat Cockatiels similarly and 2 years old should be enough.
