  1. Birds should never be outside without a cage, harness and leash.  Even fully clipped, a bird can become panicked and fly or a gust of wind can blow them off.  If you choose to harness train your bird, it will take time and patience, but then you will be able to safely take him outside.

Also, please clip both wings.  Clipping only one wing causes an imbalance in the way they fly and it will cause one half of the muscles to grow larger than the other.  Only clipping one wing was popular in the 1980's but there were several severely injured birds because of it.

  2. You can harness train your cokatiel. I think that the aviator harness is best and it comes with an instructional dvd.

Once your bird is used to the harness and can use it you can start recall training. This is teaching your bird to fly to you on command (like teaching a dog to come).

Here are some sites that give pointers and ideas on how to train.

  3. If your cockatiel does manage to fly away, you will never see him again. Cockatiels don't have a built-in homing system like some other species, because they are migrant birds. Clip his wings, both of them. Do not bring him outside without a harness or cage, and even with these, you must watch him, well, like a hawk, or the hawks or other predator will get him!

  4. You can't train a bird not to fly away; even the most well-trained bird will still fly if something startles it, flying is built into them and there's no changing that. Even training a bird to come back when called is risky and there are no guarantees that it will work; what if something startles him and he flies so far that you no longer know where he is? Or if he ends up high up in a tree, it may be such a different experience from being on a curtain rod (or wherever you have practiced getting him down from) he may not come down. Clipping wing feathers also isn't a surefire way of preventing a bird from flying off, as most birds can still fly to some degree even with their wings clipped, so you could still lose him in a sudden gust of wind.

You can buy a harness that will let you keep your bird on a leash. But don't let it outside without a harness or without being in its cage. There is no way to guarantee that a bird will not fly away, except by preventing such a situation from being possible in the first place.

  5. you should get a harness to train him outside its like a leash

  6. wait...didn't i just answer ur last question about ur PARAKEET? same situation w/ ur cockatiel?
